O Happy Day

We've lived in our house for 11 years.  The first piece of furniture we bought was our dining room table.

Our house has an open concept feel and the dining room is very wide.  We went with a table that was square and have been super happy with it.  Its been the site of many happy occasions and its where I get my craft on.

It started to look a to sad.  And you know my concept by now.  Make it over.

Before.

After

Before.  Super hard chair that hurt the buns after a while.

After.  I added foam, batting, and laminated cotton to make these super comfy.

Before.  You can see the wear and its time for a change.

After.  Cece Caldwell's Chalk Paint and Aged Wax.

The difference is amazing.  Now I have to wait ten days for it to cure.  Oh, table you are so lovely.

This was one of the easiest projects I've done in a while and the results are superb.  I've never used chalk paint before and I love how easy it was to work with.

For years I've had ideas in my head of things I wanted to do and I keep putting them off.  Everyone should love the house they live in and if you need to make changes that are feasible then do it.  Every time I finish one of my projects I love my house just a little bit more.

Accessories for My BFF

On a recent thrift excursion I scored these lamps.

$12 for the pair and the shades.

Not to shabby.

They now sit here.

These lovelies now flank my new BFF.  I used Rustoleum's Hammered Copper Spray Paint to give them a new look.  Then recovered the shades in burlap.  Love them!!!

Made this awesome canvas.  I saw it on Pinterest and had to make my own version.

Right now I have a thing for pears.  Don't know why.  I like them more to look at then to eat.

Picked up this sweet little bird at a craft fair in the spring.  It's made from recycled pieces.

See I told you pears.  These were originally Christmas ornaments, but I picked these up after Christmas for a song and just removed the hangers.

This bread bowl I got some time back.  It's moved all over my house.

I think my BFF is looking quite spiffy now that she is all dressed up.  I'm sure she'll be changed around quite a bit once the holidays arrive.  But for now she is ready to party.

Taste This

When I was a kid my mom was inventive with the games we played.  We didn't have a lot of money growing up so she would create games for us that didn't cost anything.

As my kids have gotten bigger I like to play those same games with them.  To tell them the stories of me playing those same games as a kid.

One of my favorite games was the taste test game.  My mom would blindfold us and then have us guess what the item was she placed in our mouth.  This was always a hit.

The other day we played it for the first time and my peeps loved it.

I filled up a muffin tray with little teasers and tested my little tasters.

From left to right:

Top row: popcorn, peanut butter, brownie bites, wheat thins
Middle row: carrots, potato chips, mini oreos, gummis
Bottom row: Dove Chocolate pieces, peanuts, grapes, Cheez-Its

The testers.  Lulu is hiding over on the side, but she tried to sneak in and taste a few.  My peeps loved this game even though they were cheating.  Stinkers.

I loved playing this with them.  It took me back to my childhood and hopefully one day they will taste test their own kids.

Camping Party, Part 2 Glamping

When we decided on a theme for the peeps 7th birthday they agreed on a camping theme.  We all know that when the kids agree on anything you better do it.

Since we were having several parties over several weekends we decided to keep the food and decor the same.  Just changing it up a smidgen.  We had little mans party first and then it was time for sisters.

Since the girls were camping and there is nothing glamorous about camping we decided to Glamp.  Camping with a touch of glamour.  A glamping party.

Instead of blue and orange like the boys we switched hot pink and lime green for the ladies.  Also, the girls got mani/pedi sets as there goody.

All set out and ready to go.  Each girl got a pair of hot pink flips, hot pink nail polish, and fingernail files.  These were a big hit with the ladies.

Same setup as last weekend just a color change.

When I made the little signs for the parties I made both --NO Boys Allowed and NO Girls Allowed.  Just changed them out for each party.

Little smokies were a hit.  They loved these.

When I was preparing the food for the girls party I had some concerns.  At the boys party we made 24 sliders and 4 pounds of tator tots.  Not to mention the s'mores, kabobs, and smokies.  Well the boys hardly ate anything and we had a ton left over.  So as I was making the burgers I discussed with the hubs that we might should make less.  He said he liked all the leftovers so please make it all.  Which I did.

Good thing I did those girls ate everything. I made 24 sliders and they ate 24 sliders.  They ate it all.  Blew my mind.  Never would have guessed six little girls could eat so much food.

They ate 2 dozen s'mores on a stick and still had room for cupcakes and ice cream.

They ate 2 dozen fruit kabobs and then made individual trail mix and ate all of that.  Someone needs to feed these girlie's.

I forgot to take pics of the trail mix bar.  But those girls had a blast making their custom trail mix.

One happy little birthday girl.

They painted birdhouses and we did Mani/pedis with gems and glitter.  They had a tooting contest.  Hilarious.

The hubs finally had to tell them to go to sleep at 2 a.m.  I went to bed early so I could take the morning shift.  They went to sleep at 2 and were up by 8.  Crazy.

One thing that made the girls stand out over the boys--besides eating me out of house and home.  The DRAMA.  OH.  MY.  GOODNESS.  Out of 6 girls 4 of them had a meltdown before their moms picked them up.  It's amazing how one little thing becomes massive instantaneously.  Scary!

Overall my kids had great birthdays.  I'm glad we went with camping themes, they were fun to plan and easy to pull off.   Next year, however, we are back to a joint party.  This mama can't take all the crazy.

Happy Half Birthday Peeps!

Camping Party

Around here we like a good party.  I mean who doesn't love to party.  Especially on your birthday.  Right.

Well, the problem we have is that the peeps b-day is four days after Christmas.  Seriously, stinky.  Oh, and did I mention it's also my birthday.  Double seriously stinky.

When they were little we would have their party right after New Year.  It's not like they even knew.  But then as they got bigger the problem became bigger.  Friends couldn't make it because they had holiday plans.  Also, who wants to get presents all at the same time.  Spread the love.

How to solve this problem?  Well a friend of mine suggested half birthdays.  You celebrate at the halfway point.  For us this meant we would celebrate in June.  Hello!!!  So since our kids turned three that's just what we've been doing and it has been fabulous.  Instead of being broke for one whole month now we are broke for two.  HAHA!!

This year the peeps didn't want a joint party.  Of, course that's largely in part because they will not agree on anything.  Notice that I didn't use the word can't.  I think they disagree on purpose.  But that's just my opinion.

SO themes.  What to do?  Well since we were doing multiple parties I wanted the same theme so I could reuse, but also so no one felt slighted.  Oh and when I mean multiple parties I meant three.  One for each of them with their friends and one with all the family.  Yeah we won't be doing that again.

Fortunately I was able to find a theme they liked.  We decided to go CAMPING.  In our own home of course.

Sis really wanted the separate parties so as part of her way to convince brother she told him that he could have his party first.  Each of them had a sleepover and the got to invite 5 friends.  Yes 6 six-year-olds sleeping at our house 2 weekends in a row.  I still haven't found my mind.

The nicest thing about their parties is we had the exact same things for each party.  Same foods, same beverages, same theme.  Easy peasy.

Be prepared for lots of pictures.

I tried my hand at making the cupcakes.  Sewing I can do all day long with my eyes closed.  Baking not so much.  But oh well, it's not like the boys cared how they looked.  The concept was to be flames under s'mores, but orange icing was super hard to make.  So this is what we ended up with.

What was funny was I made this and then put them on the cupcake display with all the food and after I did some things I came back to check on stuff.  The icing slid off the cupcakes and ended up all over the counter.

Each boy got a flash light.  These were good for telling scary stories and staying up super late.  Around each light we tied a note that said, "Stay safe at Camp Evan."

In between the rain we sent the boys on a scavenger hunt.  They had a compass to direct them and a bag to hold all their finds.  They had the most fun finding bugs.  Surprise, surprise.

We had the table all set for the boys when they arrived.  We started the evening off with dinner.

We bought camping themed paper and made tags and signs for all the foods.  E's party colors were orange and blue.  I made my own bakers' twine that I tied around everything.  I bought white embroidery floss.  I wrapped it around a ruler and then colored small sections on both sides.  I made E's to match his party.  Same with sis.  Super easy and super cute.

The bug juice was a big hit at both parties.  Just some Hawaiian Punch and the kids were in heaven.  We went through a ton of it.

For our food I incorporated some healthy with some yummy.  What I found to be amazing is that all of the kids preferred the fruit skewers.  They ate every one.

One of our favorite things are sliders.  Mini hamburgers on Hawaiian rolls.  They blow out the door here.

My biggest concern with this party was s'mores.  We have a chimina which I had thought about letting the boys make s'mores in, but 6 boys + fire = scary.  So we made our own.  We put two large marshmallow between graham crackers and then dipped them in melted chocolate.  Stuck the skewer through them for less mess.  The nice thing about this is that they could be made ahead of time.

Instead of hot dogs and all the possible mess, oh and the fact the hot dogs are kinda gross, we made mini pigs in a blanket.  With little smokies and crescent rolls these were a huge hit.

Our favorite snack.  They were tasty and they looked good.

The other thing we had was a trail mix bar.  This was a huge hit with the boys.  Each boy got a mason jar and they could pick whatever ingredients they liked to make their own custom trail mix.

For our custom trail mix we had:

marshmallows
chocolate chips
raisins
peanuts
banana chips
pineapple chunks
teddy grahams
m&m's

The boy had a super party.  Instead of goody bags we gave each boy a Nerf gun.  The biggest problem was it rained the whole evening.  Nerf guns in the house.  Sure thing, but only for your birthday.

A casualty from the nerf gun fight.

Come back tomorrow for pics from the Glamping Party.

Not Your Regular Chalkboard

Several years ago we painted the side of a cabinet with chalkboard paint.

Its right as you walk in our kitchen and has been a lifesaver.

We write down messages, important dates, and sweet little notes to each other.  Recently we started doing math problems on there to help the peeps.

The only problem is that it's right when you walk into our kitchen.  Oh, and we repainted the kitchen so now its a big black eyesore.

When we were visiting my sis-in-law she took me to this fantastic store.  The Frisco Mercantile. One of the coolest stores I've been to in a while.  As we were looking around I stumbled across this little beauty.

Hello Turquoise Chalkboard Paint.  I kinda freaked out a little.  Just saying.  I kept saying it's turquoise, it's turquoise.  To her credit she didn't laugh to long.

But I brought that little gem home and made her mine.

OH, sweet mama ain't she purty!!  Not only is she functional, but she matches my house.  And did I mention she's turquoise.

That sweet little chalkboard just pops now.  It's like a whole new world.  Can't wait to break it in, maybe some math problems for the peeps are in order.

Just saying...

Rattan Chair Makeover

When we first started remodeling/redoing the living room I had a set picture in my mind of what I wanted.  My goal was to only put things back in that meant something to us or we loved.  So for months I looked for a pair of chairs to sit in front of my big window.  I knew in my mind what I wanted, but some of those chairs were crazy expensive.  Then one day my sweet friend called and she buys chairs like I buy lamps.  HEHE.  Any way she had a pair she would sell me.  For $20.

That's right.

A pair of chairs.

For $20.

This is what the looked like when they came to live here.  Not so pretty to look at.  But by now you know what's going to happen.

A coat of spray paint livens them up a bunch.  I always knew they were going to be yellow.

And they set like this for several months.  But check out the background.  I think this is why I was stumped on what fabric to recover the cushions in.  They are sitting in front of my turquoise drapes.  Which is okay.  But when you put any fabric with this chair then it was way to much.

So on a recent trip to Dallas I swung by Ikea.  LOVE me some Ikea.  And picked up some neutral drapes.

Viola!!  Nice and funky and not having to compete with the turquoise drapes.

I needed a fabric that would wear well with the pooch and the peeps.  The color in this green is the color I painted my buffet.

I love the fact that my house is coming together.  It's felt like a super long journey, but the end is in sight.  Maybe...
